Job Summary

Provides expert technical direction in client system trouble shooting, and design, develops, modifies, debugs and evaluates programs for functional areas, including but not limited to Planning, Engineering, Construction, Provisioning, finance, human resources, manufacturing and marketing. Analyzes requested changes and translates business requirements into system design. This includes changes to existing programs or formulates logic for new system development, prepares ER diagrams, performs coding and tests/debugs programs. Develops conversion and system implementation plans. Prepares and obtains approval of system design concepts and programming documentation. Recommends changes in development, maintenance and system standards. Demonstrates system functionally to users, trainers, and process representatives.

Note: May be internal or external, client-focused, working in conjunction with Professional Services and outsourcing functions. May include company-wide, web-enabled solutions. Explore and evaluate new and emerging technologies relating to the design and/or production database environment. Excellent oral and written communication used to document and present design concepts and demonstrate system functionality.

Job Description

Software Asset Management (SAM) for assigned publishers:

  • Gather and understand business and user requirements in support of software purchases (including multi-million dollar transactions) and software maintenance renewals ($25M+ total value).

  • Analyze publishers’ software terms and conditions to determine alignment with business and user requirements and best practices. Recommend terms and conditions that provide the greatest flexibility now and in the future; ensure that language regarding license counts is clear and measurable.

  • Lead negotiation strategy discussions, when key licensing terms are involved. Participate in high-performance negotiation teams with Legal, Procurement, and client representatives.

  • Design and implement internal processes to regularly measure and document software license asset usage and mitigation.

  • Lead complex data analysis and verification projects ensure license compliance, help clients get the best pricing, and establish appropriate levels quantities for renewals.

  • Manage large and complex license alignment efforts to conclusion, ensuring that the process aligns with contract rights and best practices. Focus on maximizing value and minimizing risk.

  • Educate internal clients and new team members about SAM processes for purchasing software, renewing software maintenance, and complying with licensing terms.

  • Lead and participate in a matrixed team of offshore and US employees to meet business objectives and service levels for 750 monthly desktop productivity software license requests and server based software license requests (i.e., coordinate activities and process individual license requests).

  • Represent SAM team in cross-disciplinary review board that approves software products for corporate use.

  • Communicate with internal clients, ranging from technical functional experts to Executives, and vendor representatives.

  • Develop and improve best practices for achieving Software Asset Management objectives; automate tasks to improve efficiency, where appropriate; influence others to adopt best practices.

  • Apply industry's leading-edge concepts to our internal approaches.

  • Lead group projects and decisions, ensuring efficient problem resolution.

  • Participate in peer reviews of data analyses, process documentation

  • Represent SAM team in development or execution of strategic IT initiatives.

  • Lead periodic forum of IT Operations and VMO managers to review roadmaps and resolve issues.


  • Excellent communication skills and abilities to work with cross functional team and external vendors.

  • Negotiation skills; demonstrated experience with multi-million dollar software transactions with larger suppliers.

  • Ability to lead and work in a team; self-directed (requires minimal supervision to manage multiple priority, high-impact initiatives simultaneously); creative problem solver, quality focused; applies independent judgment to accomplish objectives.

  • Define and implement repeatable processes; apply best practices consistently

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Proven data analysis skills

  • Ability to focus on details, while keeping the big picture in mind

  • Ability to prepare executive summaries and actionable recommendations from detailed and complex analyses

  • Experience managing large and complex enterprise software contracts

  • 5-10 years direct Software Asset Management experience, managing over 100 publishers, including major industry software vendors

  • Experience with asset management and purchasing tools (knowledge of other complex tools a plus)

  • Demonstrated strong and positive interpersonal talents; able to interact with and influence people from all disciplines; able to balance persuasiveness and assertiveness to build relations while meeting objectives.

  • Self-awareness of skills and awareness of organizational impacts

  • Organized and structured approach

  • Proven ability to represent and address IT-focused considerations and interests, while conducting software asset management activities and negotiations.

  • Preferred hands-on experience with FlexNet Manager Solutions
