Job Summary

CenturyLink is seeking an IT Systems Engineer III with demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills to design, document, build, and troubleshoot multiple accredited and unaccredited systems/enclaves. This position will be responsible for systems in support of CenturyLink’s Government and commercial Managed Security Services platforms addressing .gov and critical infrastructure protection missions.

Job Description

  • Work in a consultative manner with others, i.e. establish rapport, interview/fact-find, define requirements, present options/recommend solutions, follow-up, and customer focused behavior.

  • Work in a dynamic team environment with changing requirements and competing priorities

  • Troubleshoot system specific issues as they arise.

  • Follow MOP, open/update service tickets, anticipate problems, and proactively take corrective action

  • Diagram and create Visio Diagrams of Network/System Architecture

  • Work cross-functionally with Engineers, Project Managers, Developers and Operations

  • Assist in designing and building out of new systems

  • Support after hours maintenance activities such as patching, and OS updates.


  • Experience with Linux (Redhat, CentOS) at the command line and familiar with server level technology (Apache, JBoss, SQL)

  • Troubleshooting server issues: systems, applications and connectivity

  • Enterprise systems experience from the standpoint of knowing how to manage a large number of servers: engineering, deployment, operations and maintenance.

  • PXE, Kickstart, Automated system builds

  • Thorough understanding with virtualization and virtual networking (VMware)

  • .Familiarity with IPTables and SELinux.

  • Familiarity with troubleshooting LDAP, Kerberos, OpenSSL certs, system hardening.

  • Experience with Shell scripting, Perl or Python experience.

  • Experience with data center servers including blade servers.

  • Experience with mass system configuration management.

  • Experience with Remedy, Monitoring Tools (i.e. Solarwinds/Nagios/JIRA)

  • Juniper/ Cisco Networking experience, Satellite server, Spacewalk,

  • Puppet and Ansible. Similar configuration management tools.

Other Requirements

  • Must be available for rotating on-call and work after hours as needed.

  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and hold an active Department of Defense TOP SECRET SCI clearance to be considered for this position.


  • Bachelor degree in a related field or equivalent work experience in the communications, networking, and/or cybersecurity fields
