Job Description

  • Location: Winnersh We are seeking a Lead IT Engineer to join a small team of highly technical, motivated and passionate individuals adopting a “DevOps” culture within the Global Release Management organization. Our remit is to provide a sustaining engineering function for the operating systems and managed applications in our customer server estates across on-premises physical servers and workloads in private and public clouds.You will provide an excellent customer experience working with, and contributing to, our existing automation toolset performing software updates and upgrades with a focus on driving efficiency and consistency. All automation and project work is to be accompanied by extensive supporting documentation, and you will be required to pilot updates before providing full training and handover to the global execution team.You will be expected to contribute to the continuous improvement of Global Release Management processes. You will be given the freedom to assess the suitability of new tools and practices and the opportunity to work on the development and support of the department’s own infrastructure and in-house automation middleware. Position Summary:

  • Function as a key member of the team, be responsible for and demonstrate input into, driving the function forward via increased efficiency achieved with robust scripts and automation

  • Build, test and pilot re-useable code executed via the automation toolset and maintain supporting documentation

  • To form close links with internal engineering teams and our vendors, analyzing the managed server estate against established standards and proactively identifying updates that increase operational stability, maintaining a release roadmap

  • Deliver new and support existing automation, acting as a project escalation point for any issues that arise as a result of maintenance

  • Where necessary cross train and mentor the Release Management execution team developing technical, procedural and soft skills coaching to increase the performance of the function

Qualifications

Position Summary:

  • A broad set of technical skills with a deep knowledge in either Windows or Linux (cross-platform experience is highly desirable) and wide-ranging experience from operational support through to application deployment and script development

  • A solid understanding of compute, virtualization, networking and storage technologies in enterprise environments

  • A proven track record of taking manual activities and streamlining their implementation via automated techniques in a large scale operational environment with established Incident and Change Management processes - examples are mandatory

  • A good understanding of the principles and processes of workflow automation and how to build robust, maintainable and reusable code using standard development practices

  • Writing technical documentation: ability to describe processes and solutions accurately; ability to break down complex technical information into clear and concise instructions

  • Excellent client facing skills and the ability to interact successfully at all levels

  • Strong influencing and effective listening skills

  • Key Technologies Mandatory

  • Coding in ONE or more of:

  • PowerShell

  • Python

  • Build, maintenance and support in an enterprise environments comprising of ONE of:

  • Microsoft Windows Server

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux

  • VMware vSphere (+ PowerCLI)

  • Patching management solutions – one of:

  • RHN

  • WSUS

  • Desirable

  • SCM (preferably Git)

  • JavaScript (and node.js)

  • Ansible
