Job Description

  • Location: Reading (Winnersh) Purpose of Position: The Lead IT Engineer is responsible for providing senior level engineering and development support (DevOps) within the Managed Services Global Operations Team responsible for supporting all managed hosting customers. The candidate will provide an excellent customer experience by developing error free, efficient scripts and automation that will manage and upgrade Operating System & associated application installations.The Lead IT Engineer will be required to develop bespoke scripts and packages to automate the deployment of software/firmware to our managed server estate. Automation and workload priorities will be driven by operational issues and pro-actively, by taking a holistic view of the current environment status and analyzing it against known vendor requirements and recommendations.All automation and project work is to be accompanied by extensive supporting documentation, and the individual will be required to pilot updates before providing full training and handover to the execution team.


Position Summary:

  • Function as a key member of the Global Release Management team, be responsible and demonstrate input into driving the function forward via increased efficiency achieved via robust scripts and automation

  • Build, Test and Pilot re-useable scripts that can be executed via the Release Management Automation tool

  • Operate within established programming guidelines and policies

  • To form close links with our vendors, analyzing the managed estate against vendor documentation and proactively identifying updates that increase Operational stability

  • To form close links with the Product teams and be responsible for building and maintaining a Release Road Map specific to the Microsoft OS and associated core applications

  • Be fully responsible for driving automated updates across our Microsoft server base

  • The engineer will be required to execute maintenance activities during the ‘pilot’ stage of automation and testing, this will involve some out of hours working

  • Act as a project escalation point for any issues that arise as a result of maintenance (when lead development engineer)

  • To cross train/mentor and up skill all junior members of the team

  • Provide weekly management reports confirming the status of all activities

  • Where necessary cross train and mentor the Release Management execution team developing technical, procedural and soft skills coaching to increase the performance of the function

Minimum Requirements:

  • Proven track record of taking manual activities and streamlining their implementation via automated techniques – examples are mandatory

  • Technical skills need to be well rounded ranging from operational support through to application deployment and script development

  • Technical experience should include:

  • Strong scripting skills in Powershell and either Perl or Python

  • Advanced level experience of the Microsoft Operating system

  • Exposure to high availability solutions – Microsoft Clustering, site to site replication tools and technologies

  • VMware vSphere 5/6 and PowerCLI

  • Use of an enterprise automation solution, ideally HP Server Automation/Operations Orchestrator

  • Ability to break down complex technical information into clear and concise instructions for the Release Management engineers

  • Be able to develop and script as part of a team all achieving desired results via standard development practices

  • Experience of working in at IT or managed Hosting operations environment, with strong operational experience in Incident and Change Management

  • Strong exposure to Release Management activities within a multi-national organization

  • Excellent Client facing skills and the ability to interact successfully with all the levels of the client and IT Operational teams

Preferred Requirements

  • BSc/BA Hon Degree or equivalent workplace experience

  • Microsoft and/or VMware certifications

  • Exposure to MongoDB/Kue/Agenda/Node/Ansible

  • Understanding and ability to utilize and script in BASH (or other shell languages)

  • Operational experience with Red Hat 5/6/7

  • Experience with Symantec NetBackup

  • Experience with Remedy ARS

  • Exposure and working knowledge of Microsoft SQL

  • Understanding of audit certifications including ISO and PCI
